Module 4: Evaluating the web

I chose the below site, as it was a good site from my previous tasks, the site is from the library website of the University of Berkeley, California, USA and is a reliable and authorised site, I therefore have faith that the credibility of that site is without question.

Many other credible sites link to it and from it and it is clear in it's subject matter of guiding and assisting students to utilise the internet more effectively. I have previously been trained by university librarians in the appropriate use of search engines for researching articles and sources for research papers and I thought that this site offered a good on-line resource to that end.

Reflections:

I would usually check the website itself as opposed to my 'own notes' as websites change,disappear and taking another 'snapshot' of the site would trigger more memories about it's usefulness and content than say, just a brief annotation of words ( I being a visual learner)

There are two parts on the 'About this tutorial' page that would be of the most use.Firstly, the 'What's unique about this tutorial?' gives a good description of the motivations and purpose of the this offering and a link from that paragraph to 'evaluate everything you find', this takes you to a more detailed breakdown of a webpage/site and how to check for authority and credibility.Very user friendly and easy to navigate through.However, I did not use this for my annotated bibliography assignment as I was looking at slightly more advanced user sites at that time.

I have used my blog spot to record the info, as above and utilised the very nature of the exercise to organise the websites listed above via the title of the exercise ' Organising search information task', I could also include it in my favourites on my IE but this would be duplication and after this unit is completed I would be deleting them and maintaining my minimalist favourites list as is my discipline. Maintaining these websites info on my blogspot means I can access them anywhere I can connect to the internet and not just on my PC.

I felt that the information provided in Copernic was more accurate per se with Titles of the topic/article located and it gave a side list of related articles to further define the search.

Google just gave me everything that had the search words in it, with varying degrees of statistically significant variances - highest probability to lowest etc.

Google gave the best search at first glance, but I think Copernic threw out all the rubbish and hones the search down more intelligently and saved the user ( me!) a lot of time in sifting.

Module 4: Downloading tools/plug-ins

Due to the nature of my employment and 2 other Tertiary courses, I have the following most recent programs:

1.Adobe pdf reader and writer - also used to convert docs to forms
** Hate Adobe, so user unfriendly, but it's what's on offer and utlised in my workplace and at University.

2.Flash/Shockwave

3.Quicktime/Windows Media/Real Networks players

4.Glooton ( Free for PC ) and Copernic 2.02

5.URL Manager - although I never use it, I have disciplined myself to keep only the absolute necessary favourites I actually use regularly and keep them in order ( alphabetically)
** I did not like Bookmark Buddy - thought it was a bit too 'home made'.

6. Not required, am always on-line as have 20GB ADSL2+ download available, so no need to ever save time or money, I could never use it all up each month, hence it stays connected permanently.

This web site offers a list of ways to diagnose and repair DNS problems. The tools used are UNIX, Linux, MS-DOS and Perl scripts and are mostly functional on a cross-platform. There is a separate link to Windows Tools but the link is outdated. The web site provides a variety of links to help you diagnose basic and overall problems. It also provides links to Network Information management systems. There are a variety of links that provide online and miscellaneous tools as well. The site is useful in its direction to other websites. It is a map of where to find information.

The JavaScript Source provides a variety of examples that can be cut and pasted to use in the creation of your own web pages. The site offers Java coding for free. The JavaScript Source also provides links that will lead you to websites that will help you create Generators, calculators, buttons and search pages. The web site is easy to use, functional and really does provide script for free.

The FTP web site was a bit disappointing. There were no additional links and only brief explanations about FTP. Not useful for an advanced user, but good to explain basically to the new user.

FTP help was a well designed and thought out web site. The web site provides links to guides that will assist you in understanding the functions of a Webmaster, technician, online auctions, gaming and Mp3 downloads. The web site is for all levels of users and provides common information that make the internet more efficient for the user.

SearchVB.com is a web site that provides a lay definition for HTTP. In the paragraph long definition there are links that will lead users to other pages for an explanation of tech jargon that they may not already know. The web site is for a specific purpose and does what is expected.

Hypertext Transfer Protocols explains through a variety of analogies what exactly HTTP is and why you may want to know what it is. The web site is informative and helpful. It not only provides a definition for HTTP but provides links that will take users to other pages that will explain header fields, general properties and request methods. The web site uses some technical jargon, but also provides a history of how HTTP was created. The web site was informative, but not very useful.

I have not used any images or words that contravene copyright laws.

I would not be in contravention if I used the Curtin logo, so long as I acknowledged and obtained that permission to do so was granted.If it was not, I should not use it.

Have spent numerous hours trying to get Notepad to work, no luck, even the IT gurus had a go, they blame Vista, in fact they blame everything on Vista!! Have done the tutorials on-line but cannot duplicate process on my machines, and they are both now Vista OS.Hmmmm....

See comments on 1st post for today about my history with chat tools: I also have used and still use MSN, Yahoo, Skype ( Chat and VOIP).I even lost a BF to ICQ - he met someone on-line.
I cannot d/l any new s/w on this PC, so will need to finish this on my PC later.

Added 24 ICQ's that I could locate in Net11 threads.And left message on discussion board to same.

Passed the self-test,although the ICQ # was out of date, but the self-test didn't know that, but these things happen.

From research of students ICQ profiles, some students are obviously high-end users of ICQ utilising all the features and 'bells and whistles' offered by the facility. Others are either quite low-end users or keep private information to the bare minimum in the public domain. Wise choice indeed. My fave part of ICQ is being able to have a status facility so you know where people are or are not, saves sitting about waiting for responses.

I used to use ICQ quite a bit until I started working in offices that either restricted access to ICQ or used other instant chat, like Skype or MSN or Talisma.

Module 2 Tasks: Email lists

I have been a member of several email lists for many years and utilise these because it is the way that the majority of members voted to utilise when the list was set up ( Cat Breeders group).The moderator chose this particular form as it was the best user friendly option available, given that the other members were of varying degrees of tech-savviness.Utilising email lists was seen as something even the most 'non-PC literate users' could manage without too much difficulty and I suppose this would be one of the major benefits for email list members.

My only negative would be that it can be a little time consuming if you don't check it regularly and some members ( despite education attempts) constantly hit' reply all' when unnecessary or constantly re-send on old emails that are no longer relevant to the current message and a lot of wading through 'waste' is necessary.

Having looked over the material for this Modules tasks, I will begin by stating that I am currently employed as an on-line technical support officer for a large multinational financial group and as part of my everyday tasks is managing high volume inbound and outbound chat (40 to 80 clients per day), email ( up to 400+)and telephony( 20-75+) enquiries from our clients utilising Outlook,Talisma ( chat and email managers) and in-house programs.

It is part of my KPIs to maintain logs off all chats/emails/calls and to maintain the utmost professionalism in both content and recording of logged contacts.

So I feel a little like back at kindergarten with some of this stuff, so you'll have to be understanding when my responses mat be brief and lacking detail: I've moved over a lot of this stuff at lightning speed as expected...

Well, due to constant stuffing about by the neolithic PC's at my employers - I have not been able to save any of the work I have been doing to my blog - and have had to delete all corrupted files..blah blah blah. Can't live with them! Can't kill them!! ( computers I mean, but throwing them up against a wall has a lot of appeal!!)

Am off to my other Tertiary Institutions Residential School soon, hopefully I'll have time between 11 straight days of that exciting level of stress, assignments, labs, exams and practicums to find time for my little project blog....but then I am a very disturbed optimist! ( fancy me thinking a computer could save work..what was I thinking?)

Well this was good clean fun, unlike the Monty Python sketch of the same name ( you Gen Xers will know of what I speak)..I used (http://centralops.net/co/) URL and have added the link in my Links section at the bottom of the page and it took 16 hops and 247 milliseconds....Is that fast?But, the IP Address was " curtin.edu.au [134.7.179.10] "..... so I don't know how this stuff works ( sounds like a cool name for a website) but there you have it.

Well, that's my effort for this morning, not a bad 3 hours work, now to go to bad work for 9 hours!!!!....and come back and do some more.

Have just downloaded this and thanks to Jonathan ( again!) for steering me there, it works much better than other sites I surfed. (http://software.visicommedia.com/en/products/aceftp/) Here is the URL and I have added to my links at the bottom of the page.

Missing word _ capitalisation .....hmmm lot of work and downloading for such a little word....not a lot of capitalising my time or resources.

I tried 2 other FTP downloads and was not impressed, no user guides, not user friendly and when I say user , I mean Joe Citizen not Joe Techhead - so would not probably ever use this again and go back to my usual download agent. I like the one I finally downloaded as it was a bit more user friendly for an old bird like me, whose only ever had Microsoft in her life.

Although I loved the Star Wars homage ( Boy, how long did that take to do!?) I'm not a fan of Telnet..I can see how it would have been completely amazing to the propeller heads of the 70's and 80's when they were first exploring the 'Undiscovered Country' AKA Cyberspace...but I like my bells and whistles!!

Positives, Telnet was very fast connection and response time for commands was lightening quick...I would use it again if I was stuck in some backwater internet caf..say in Upper Kumbucca West or perhaps, Dee Why ( or if it's a curriculum requirement :) !

Although, the functionality of the Telnet client I have, many thanks go out to Jonathan for steering me!! some applied logic and a good deal of praying saw me through to the end of the task instructions ( http://www.computerhope.com/dshare.htm ), is the URL and I have added to my links at the bottom of the page.

Well, better late than never - after much reading and researching I selected Net 11 to augment my current study at another tertiary institution ( to remain nameless) and it's general elective requirements and as part of my ' Great Plan' I want to include on-line counselling when I open my private practice in a few years. I though learning more about the Internet would be useful and this unit appeared not to impinge in my already overly full schedule.....overly full!!.. Crammed to the rafters is a better description!!..I was talking to a work colleague the other day and he asked what was I doing at Uni? and it struck me..Which one?... I am enrolled in 3 universities and doing a full time work load between, actually probably a bit more than full time - but one of those should be over and done by August, this year...Phew and it's been a long time coming, I enrolled in that particular institution in 1999 ( I think!) Anyway, enough moaning about my life - Module 1 and the Telnet client.....
